Group Swim Lessons

The Streator Family YMCA offers group swim lessons for all ages. A natural progression promotes safe and effective swimming for all ages—from infants learning to love the water to advanced swimmers perfecting their strokes. Our swim lessons are held once per week. New sessions open on a monthly basis.

Registering for the appropriate swim level will ensure your child gets the maximum benefit from the class. Use the chart below to help determine which level to register for.

Levels A & B) Water Discovery / Water Exploration

This is a combo class of Water Discovery & Water Exploration. See descriptions below:


Water Discovery – Ages: 6+ Months (Typically 6 – 24 months old)

Can the student respond to verbal cues and jump on land? Not yet? This is the correct class for you!

In this class, we introduce infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment and learn to become comfortable in water.

This is a parent & child class. At the Y, we know families take a variety of forms. As a result, we define parent broadly to include all adults with primary responsibility for raising children, including biological parents, adoptive parents, guardians, stepparents, grandparents, or any other type of parenting relationship. There should be a ratio of 1:1 parent to child in the water.


Water Exploration – Ages:  6+ Months (Typically 2 – 3 years old)

Is the student comfortable working with an instructor without a parent in the water? Not yet? This is the correct placement for you!

In this class, we focus on teaching body positions, blowing bubbles, and the basic fundamental aquatic skills.

Stages 1-2) Water Acclimation / Water Movement

This is a combo class of Water Acclimation and Water Movement. See descriptions below:


Water Acclimation  – Ages:  3+ years (Typically 3 – 4 years old)

Will the student go underwater voluntarily? Not yet? This is the correct class for you!

In this class, we help transition smoothly from parent participation classes to instructor-led preschool level classes.


Water Movement – Ages:  3+ years (Typically 4 – 6 years old)

Can the student do a front and back float independently? Not yet? This is the correct class placement for you!

In this class, students will work on increasing their comfort in the water and underwater exploration. As we progress through the course, we move from assisted skill development to an ability to perform skills more independently.

Stages 3-4) Water Stamina / Stroke Introduction

This is a combo class of Water Stamina and Stroke Introduction. See descriptions below:


Water Stamina  – Ages:  3+ years (Typically 5 – 12 years old)

Can the student swim 10-15 yards on his or her front and back? Not yet? This is the correct class placement for you!

In this class, we focus on water stamina.  We work on developing intermediate skills performed at longer distances and times than previous levels.


Stroke Introduction – Ages:  3+ years (Typically 6 – 12 years old)

Can the student swim 15 yards of front and back crawl? Not yet? This is the correct class placement for you!

In this class, we begin stroke introduction. We begin working on front crawl, back crawl, and reinforce water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. We will also begin working on seated dives and kneeling dives.
